Diseases and disorders that can be treated with acupuncture

The diseases or disorders for which acupuncture therapy has been tested in controlled clinical trials reported in the recent literature can be classified into four categories as shown below.

1. Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which acupuncture has been proved-through controlled trials-to be an effective treatment:

  • Adverse reactions to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy
  • Allergic rhinitis (including hay fever)
  • Biliary colic
  • Depression (including depressive neurosis and depression following stroke)
  • Dysentery, acute bacillary
  • Dysmenorrhoea, primary
  • Epigastralgia, acute (in peptic ulcer, acute and chronic gastritis, and gastrospasm)
  • Facial pain (including craniomandibular disorders)
  • Headache
  • Hypertension, essential
  • Hypotension, primary
  • Induction of labour
  • Knee pain
  • Leukopenia
  • Low back pain
  • Malposition of fetus, correction of
  • Morning sickness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Neck pain
  • Pain in dentistry (including dental pain and temporomandibular dysfunction)
  • Periarthritis of shoulder
  • Postoperative pain
  • Renal colic
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Sprain
  • Stroke
  • Tennis elbow

2. Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which the therapeutic effect of acupuncture has been shown but for which further proof is needed:

  • Abdominal pain (in acute gastroenteritis or due to gastrointestinal spasm)
  • Acne vulgaris
  • Alcohol dependence and detoxification
  • Bell’s palsy
  • Bronchial asthma
  • Cancer pain
  • Cardiac neurosis
  • Cholecystitis, chronic, with acute exacerbation
  • Cholelithiasis
  • Competition stress syndrome
  • Craniocerebral injury, closed
  • Diabetes mellitus, non-insulin-dependent
  • Earache
  • Epidemic haemorrhagic fever
  • Epistaxis, simple (without generalized or local disease)
  • Eye pain due to subconjunctival injection
  • Female infertility
  • Facial spasm
  • Female urethral syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia and fasciitis
  • Gastrokinetic disturbance
  • Gouty arthritis
  • Hepatitis B virus carrier status
  • Herpes zoster (human (alpha) herpesvirus 3)
  • Hyperlipaemia
  • Hypo-ovarianism
  • Insomnia
  • Labour pain
  • Lactation, deficiency
  • Male sexual dysfunction, non-organic
  • Ménière disease
  • Neuralgia, post-herpetic
  • Neurodermatitis
  • Obesity
  • Opium, cocaine and heroin dependence
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Pain due to endoscopic examination
  • Pain in thromboangiitis obliterans
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (Stein-Leventhal syndrome)
  • Postextubation in children
  • Postoperative convalescence
  • Premenstrual syndrome
  • Prostatitis, chronic
  • Pruritus
  • Radicular and pseudoradicular pain syndrome
  • Raynaud syndrome, primary
  • Recurrent lower urinary-tract infection
  • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy
  • Retention of urine, traumatic
  • Schizophrenia
  • Sialism, drug-induced
  • Sjögren syndrome
  • Sore throat (including tonsillitis)
  • Spine pain, acute
  • Stiff neck
  • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction
  • Tietze syndrome
  • Tobacco dependence
  • Tourette syndrome
  • Ulcerative colitis, chronic
  • Urolithiasis
  • Vascular dementia
  • Whooping cough (pertussis)

3. Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which there are only individual controlled trials reporting some therapeutic effects, but for which acupuncture is worth trying because treatment by conventional and other therapies is difficult:

  • Chloasma
  • Choroidopathy, central serous
  • Colour blindness
  • Deafness
  • Hypophrenia
  • Irritable colon syndrome
  • Neuropathic bladder in spinal cord injury
  • Pulmonary heart disease, chronic
  • Small airway obstruction

4. Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which acupuncture may be tried provided the practitioner has special modern medical knowledge and adequate monitoring equipment:

  • Breathlessness in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Coma
  • Convulsions in infants
  • Coronary heart disease (angina pectoris)
  • Diarrhoea in infants and young children
  • Encephalitis, viral, in children, late stage
  • Paralysis, progressive bulbar and pseudobulbar

    경맥도 변천에 따른 침구의학의 나아갈 길

    19일, ‘고대경락도에서 발견한 이야기’ 특별 강연


    경희대학교 한의과대학 침구경락과학연구센터(소장 이혜정)가 오는 19일 오후 4시, 경희대학교 한의과대학 황제실(B1)에서 중국 중의과학원 침구연구소 황룡상(黃龍祥) 교수를 초대해 ‘고대경락도에서 발견한 이야기’를 주제로 특별 강연을 개최한다. 

    황룡상 교수는 침구-경혈 문헌의 역사적 고찰을 통한 경맥의 개념 및 수혈 주치의 계통적 연구를 이끌어온 전문가로 경맥도의 변천과정을 통해 고대인들이 침을 치료하는 과정에서 경락의 개념을 어떻게 활용해 왔는지에 대해 전해줄 예정이다.

    특히 이날 강연에서는 △경락도의 분류 △임맥도 및 산경도 △경락선 없는 경맥도 △경혈이 표기된 경맥도 △동일서적에 나타난 다른 경맥도 △왜 경맥도에서 근육이 사라졌는가? △경락맥도는 과거에 왜 활용되지 않았는가? 등을 중심으로 발표를 이어간다.

    경락도의 역사적 변천 및 침구의학에서의 의의에 대해서는 최근 국내에서 번역 출간된 <그림으로 읽는 한의학- 침구경락, 청홍출판사>를 통해 소개된 바 있다. 

    이번 특별강연에서 황룡상 교수가 전하는 경락 이야기를 통해 침구의학의 나아가야 할 방향에 대한 심도있는 논의가 있을 것으로 기대된다.

    사단법인 대한한의학회, 초도 이사회 개최

    정관 시행세칙 개정 등 현안 논의

    지난 10월 보건복지부로부터 법인 이관 및 정관 개정에 대한 승인을 받고 사단법인으로 출범한 대한한의학회(회장 김갑성)가 11일 한의사회관 추나홀에서 ‘제1회 이사회’를 갖고, 사단법인 출범에 따른 정관 시행세칙 및 각종 제규정에 대한 정비 등 현안에 대해 논의했다.

    김갑성 회장은 개회사를 통해 “한해가 마무리되는 시점에서 사단법인 승인, 전국한의학학술대회의 성공적 개최 등 좋은 결실을 맺을 수 있게 됐다”며 “특히 올해 전국한의학학술대회의 성공적 개최를 밑거름 삼아 내년에는 더욱 다양하고 내실있는 학술대회가 개최될 수 있도록 더욱 노력해 나가자”고 말했다.

    이날 회의에서는 △법인 이관 및 정관 개정 승인 △사단법인 이관에 따른 회무 일정 △2013전국한의학학술대회 개최 결과 및 2014 보수교육 개최 계획서 제출 △제12회 대한한의학회 학술대상 △회원학회 인준 심사 △2013 WFAS 및 ICMART 참가 등 그동안 진행되었던 회무에 대한 보고가 있었다. 

    특히 이날 회의에서는 사단법인 대한한의학회의 원활한 회무 운영을 위해 정관 시행세칙을 개정(안)에 대한 심층있는 논의를 진행했다. 

    논의 결과 제6조(겸직금지)에서 ‘본회 임원은 다음의 직을 겸할 수 없다. 1. 회원학회 임원…’을 ‘…1. 회원학회 회장’으로, 또 제7조(대의원 선출) 제3항 ‘대의원은 대의원에 피선된 당해 주된 회원학회 이외 회원학회의 임원을 겸할 수 없다’를 삭제하는 한편 제8조(대의원 정원) 제2항 중 ‘…그 회원학회가 누적된 체납분을 해소하고 연회비의 납부 실적 또는 의무분담금에 대한 의무를 이행하면 그러하지 아니한다’라는 조항에서 ‘당해 회계연도 11월 말까지’라는 명확한 기간을 삽입토록 하는 원안을 통과시키고, 내년 2월에 개최되는 총회에 상정키로 했다.

    또한 최도영 수석부회장을 위원장으로 하는 ‘예산심의소위원회’를 구성, 차기 이사회에서 2014회계연도 사업계획 및 예산 편성을 논의키로 했으며, 각종 규정이 정관에 의해 만들어진 것으로 승인하는 한편 한창호 제도이사에게 각종 규정을 정비해 차기 이사회에 안건으로 상정할 것을 위임했다. 

    한편 대한한의학회는 내년 1월25일 ‘제1회 평의회’를 개최해 회원학회 인준 등을 결정할 계획이며, 2월8일에는 ‘제1회 총회’를 개최해 회장 및 감사 선거 등을 진행할 예정이다.
